Therapeutic Touch® was developed in 1972 by Dolores Krieger, Professor of Nursing at New York University and her mentor Dora Kunz.  Therapeutic Touch is a type of energy work, an interpretation of several ancient healing practices. It is a consciously directed process of energy exchange during which the practitioner uses the hands as a focus for facilitating healing.

One of the premises of Therapeutic Touch is that we are all made of energy and energy extends beyond one's own skin, like heat radiates from a fire. If our energy is running smoothly, we will feel better mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Have You Ever Felt Someone else's Energy?

  • Have you ever been thinking about a person and then had the phone ring and that person was on the other end of the phone?
  • Have you ever been in a crowded room and felt like someone was staring at you and turned around to find that someone was?
  • Have you ever had an instant like or dislike for a person?
  • Have you ever entered a room and felt an instant feeling of tension or an instant feeling of warmth when you walked in?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions you have been picking up on the energy of others.

Energy Exercise

1. Place your hands about 1-2 inches apart in a cupped position. 2. Concentrate on the energy between your hands. Now slowly move your hands further apart.

3. Do you feel any differences? Now try moving your hands up and down.  4. Then move them in a circular motion.

Notice any differences? If you don’t feel any differences get yourself quiet and focused and try again. This may take some practice. Different people experience different sensations. There are no right or wrong experiences. If you were able to feel a difference when you did this you were feeling your energy.

If you are interested in learning how to consciously assess and direct energy with the intent to help and heal another person, plant, or animal then you may be interested in learning Therapeutic Touch.
